Tumble-Bee Rock Tumbler Review & Other Budget Tumbler Brands (2026)

The Tumble-Bee rock tumbler sits in a useful middle ground: sturdier than toy kits, cheaper than Lortone and Thumler's. The TB-14 gives you a single 4 lb rubber barrel with thermal overload protection, and the TB-22 gives you two 2 lb barrels. Both are sensible first tumblers for adults and older kids.

They're not the only budget brands worth a look. Highland Park Lapidary, Extreme Tumblers' Rebel 17 and KomeStone's newer brushless kits all compete in the same tier, with different strengths. Every spec below comes from the maker's page or listing, and noise figures come from Rocktumbler.com's measurements.

The Budget Tumblers, Reviewed

Tumble-Bee TB-14-KIT: Best Tumble-Bee

Who it's for: adults and older teens who want a real rubber-barrel machine and grit to start.

The TB-14 is Tumble-Bee's single-barrel model, with one 4 lb rubber barrel, bigger than the 3 lb barrels on Lortone's 3A or Thumler's single-barrel. The kit version includes two pre-measured grit kits (coarse, medium, fine and TXP polish) and 1-1/2 lb of agate, jasper and petrified wood, three of the most forgiving stones to tumble.

Tumble-Bee lists a thermal overload protector that cuts power if the motor overheats, a non-slip timing belt designed to stay on its pulleys, and a rust-proof housing. Oil and an Allen wrench are included. Tumble-Bee says units are assembled, tested and shipped in the USA. It's 115V only.

Rocktumbler.com measured the TB14 at 66 to 69 dB at three feet: quieter than plastic toy kits, louder than Lortone's 3A at 55 to 58 dB.

Pros

  • 4 lb rubber barrel
  • Thermal overload protection
  • Two grit kits and hard rough included
  • Assembled and tested in the USA, per Tumble-Bee

Cons

  • Louder than Lortone and Thumler's
  • No timer
  • 115V only

Tumble-Bee TB-22: Best Budget Twin

Who it's for: budget buyers who want two batches going.

The TB-22 runs two 2 lb rubber barrels. Retail listings describe a thermal overload protector, a motor cover enclosing the motor and pulleys, built-in barrel guides, and a grooved polyurethane timing belt reinforced with polyester fibers. An extra belt, oil, an Allen wrench and a manual come in the box. One retailer lists it at 13 x 6 x 6 inches and 6 lb.

Rocktumbler.com measured it at the same 66 to 69 dB as the TB14. A Rock & Gem profile of a long-time TB-22 user praised its ease of use and durability. Two 2 lb barrels hold less rock per batch than one 4 lb barrel, but let you run two stages at once. Our double barrel rock tumbler guide compares bigger twins.

Pros

  • Two barrels at a budget tier
  • Overload protection and enclosed motor
  • Spare belt included

Cons

  • Small 2 lb barrels
  • Specs mostly from retail listings
  • Louder than hobby-grade rubber twins

Highland Park RT3.0 Rotary Tumbler: Best Build Quality

Who it's for: buyers who want a modern, belt-free design.

Highland Park Lapidary's RT3.0 is built differently from most budget tumblers. Highland Park lists a brushed, heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel frame, a high-torque, variable-speed, low-voltage brushless DC motor in a direct-drive layout with no belts or pulleys, and a 110V-to-24V adapter. The molded rubber barrel has an anodized aluminum lid with a brass thumb-knob, and runs on stainless shafts with nylon bushings.

No belt means no belt to slip, stretch or replace, which removes the most common wear part on a rotary tumbler. The barrel holds 3 lb of stone, and variable speed lets you slow down for fragile material. Highland Park's product page doesn't state the warranty or speed range.

Pros

  • Stainless frame and direct drive
  • No belts to wear out
  • Variable-speed brushless motor
  • Low-voltage operation

Cons

  • Warranty and rpm range not on the product page
  • Single 3 lb barrel
  • Less owner history than Lortone or Thumler's

Highland Park RT3.0 Rotary Tumbler

by Highland Park Lapidary

Check price on Amazon

Amazon availability: we couldn't find Highland Park's RT3.0 or RT6 on Amazon.com when we checked in October 2026; Highland Park Lapidary sells them through its own site. If you'd rather order on Amazon, the KomeStone G1 reviewed below is the closest alternative: a brushless motor on a metal base, a 4 lb rubber barrel and three speed settings. It's belt-driven, though, so it doesn't share Highland Park's direct-drive design.

Highland Park RT6 Rotary Tumbler: Best Variable Speed

Who it's for: tumblers who want a 6 lb barrel and control over barrel speed.

The RT6 scales up the same design: 6 lb barrel, 304 stainless frame, variable-speed brushless DC motor with direct drive, and a 24V adapter. Highland Park also sells the RT12B66 with two 6 lb barrels and the RT1212 with a single 12 lb barrel, both with variable speed.

Variable speed is useful. Rocktumbler.com says glass and fragile stones do best when the barrel turns under about 50 to 60 rpm, while hard agate tolerates more. With the RT6, you can match speed to the load. Our large rock tumbler guide covers bigger machines.

Pros

  • 6 lb barrel with variable speed
  • Belt-free direct drive
  • Stainless frame
  • Larger siblings available

Cons

  • Speed range not published
  • Warranty not on the product page
  • One barrel

Amazon availability: like the RT3.0, the RT6 is sold through Highland Park Lapidary rather than Amazon. On Amazon, the Rebel 17 below is the bigger-barrel option, and the KomeStone G1 is the closest adjustable-speed one.

Rebel 17 Rock Tumbler for Adults: Best Big Barrel on a Budget

Who it's for: buyers with lots of rough who can't stretch to a Thumler's Model B.

Extreme Tumblers' Rebel 17 has a 17 lb stainless drum with a thick, removable rubber liner turning at 20 rpm. The listing calls out a 115V, 1/30 HP fan-cooled motor with overload protection, ball bearings and a powder-coated base, plus a 3-year barrel and liner warranty and 1-year motor warranty.

Extreme Tumblers also sells a Rebel 17 for cleaning brass that turns at about 40 rpm. For rocks, order the rock tumbler version. The listing doesn't state how much rock it processes per load; plan on Lortone's half-to-two-thirds fill rule.

Pros

  • 17 lb drum with removable rubber liner
  • Slow 20 rpm barrel speed
  • Overload-protected, fan-cooled motor
  • Long barrel and liner warranty

Cons

  • Easy to confuse with the brass version
  • Heavy and space-hungry
  • Rock-per-load not published

KomeStone G1 4LB Professional Rock Tumbler Kit: Best Brushless Kit

Who it's for: beginners who want a timer, a 4 lb barrel and everything in the box.

The G1 pairs a 4 lb tire-grade rubber barrel with a brushless motor and a heavy-duty metal base. KomeStone says the barrel is up to 75% quieter than plastic. Controls include three speeds and a 9-day timer with pause, resume, auto shutoff and memory. The kit has rough, a four-stage silicon carbide grit set, two spare belts, jewelry findings and a strainer, with a one-year warranty. KomeStone sells the motor, control panel, belt, barrel and lid kit as parts.

What About the KomeStone K2 Elite?

The K2 Elite is part of KomeStone's K series, alongside the K1, K1 Pro, K4 and K5, according to KomeStone's own listings. Retail listings describe it as a 3 lb rubber-barrel model with a brushless motor and noise reduction. We couldn't verify its full specs from KomeStone, so we haven't given it a product box. Check the current listing, and compare it with the KomeStone K1 in our rock tumbler kit guide and the covered K4 in our quiet rock tumbler guide.

Pros (G1)

  • 4 lb barrel with brushless motor
  • Timer with memory
  • Complete kit; parts sold
  • Metal base

Cons (G1)

  • Kit-brand track record
  • Electronics add failure points
  • Included rough won't fill the barrel alone

Buying Guide: Choosing a Budget Rock Tumbler

Rubber Barrel, Not Plastic

Rocktumbler.com says rubber barrels absorb the impact of tumbling rock and run quietly, while inexpensive plastic-barrel tumblers are much louder. Every pick here uses rubber or a rubber liner.

Motor Protection

Look for thermal or overload protection. Tumble-Bee, Extreme Tumblers and the hobby-grade makers list it. A tumbler runs 24 hours a day for weeks; Lortone's 5-to-7-days-per-stage schedule and Harbor Freight's 4-to-6-week cycle mean a lot of hours on the motor.

Belts: Good Ones or None

Belts are the most common wear part. Tumble-Bee's grooved timing belts are designed not to slip off their pulleys, and Highland Park's direct drive removes the belt entirely. Keep a spare for belt-driven machines.

Capacity vs Your Rough

Barrels should be half to two-thirds full of rock, per Lortone. A 4 lb barrel needs about 2 to 3 lb of rough; a 17 lb drum needs far more. Our best rock tumbler roundup has a capacity guide.

Plan for Hardness

All of these follow the same schedule as hobby machines. Harbor Freight's manual gives 7 to 10 days of coarse for hard stones, and Rocktumbler.com suggests about 1-1/2 fewer coarse days per Mohs point below 7. Keep soft stones in their own batch.

Compare With Harbor Freight

Harbor Freight's Central Machinery 6 lb dual-drum is the cheapest twin in stores, with a 90-day warranty. See our Harbor Freight rock tumbler review for how it compares.

How We Chose

We didn't test these tumblers ourselves. We researched them. We used Tumble-Bee's and retailers' listings, Highland Park Lapidary's product pages, Extreme Tumblers' and KomeStone's listings, Rocktumbler.com's noise measurements and a Rock & Gem owner profile. Where we couldn't confirm a model's specs from its maker, as with the KomeStone K2 Elite, we said so and left out the product box.

FAQ

Is the Tumble-Bee rock tumbler any good?

It's one of the better budget choices. The TB-14 has a 4 lb rubber barrel, a thermal overload protector and a non-slip timing belt, and the kit includes two grit sets and rough. Rocktumbler.com measured the TB14 and TB22 at 66 to 69 dB, louder than Lortone and Thumler's rubber-barrel machines but in line with budget tumblers.

What is the difference between the Tumble-Bee TB-14 and TB-22?

The TB-14 has one 4 lb rubber barrel. The TB-22 has two 2 lb rubber barrels on the same style of chassis, so you can run two stages or two rock types at once, but each batch is smaller.

Is the Rebel 17 good for rocks?

The rock version is. Extreme Tumblers sells a Rebel 17 rock tumbler with a 17 lb rubber-lined stainless drum turning at 20 rpm, and a separate Rebel 17 for cleaning brass that turns at about 40 rpm. Make sure you order the rock tumbler version.

Who makes Highland Park rock tumblers?

Highland Park Lapidary, which sells rotary tumblers from a 3 lb single barrel up to 75 lb machines. Its current small models, such as the RT3.0 and RT6, use a stainless steel frame and a low-voltage, variable-speed brushless DC motor with direct drive and no belts.

What is the KomeStone K2 Elite?

A KomeStone kit tumbler in its K series, alongside the K1, K1 Pro, K4 and K5. Retail listings describe it as a 3 lb rubber-barrel model with a brushless motor and noise reduction, but we couldn't verify its full specifications from KomeStone, so check the current listing before buying.

Verdict

The Tumble-Bee TB-14-KIT is the best Tumble-Bee rock tumbler for most people: a 4 lb rubber barrel, overload protection and two grit kits. If build quality matters most, Highland Park's belt-free RT3.0 and RT6 are the standouts in the budget tier. Choose the Rebel 17 when you need a big barrel without paying hobby-grade prices.
